Firebringer

December 2022

For me, designing Firebringer was all about heightening reality, playing up the comedy, and embracing the campiness of the show and its low-brow humor. Telling the story through gags like Ducker's nest-like Supreme Wizard headdress, Nicolai's skimpy leaf speedo, or the rainbow flower crowns fit for the ending's iconic queer marriage was super exciting and pushed the verbal gags to another level.

When designing the visual story between Jemilla and Zazzalil, I wanted to embrace color in showing their diametric opposition but also the foil they would become to each other at the end of the show. At first glance, they are opposites with Jemilla in dark brown and blue feathers (to represent her peace-driven ideals) while Zazzalil is in a light tan dress with yellow and orange feathers (to foreshadow her fire-bringing escapades and show her explosive personality). While blue and orange are opposites, they are also complementary, much like their relationship.

My two favorite pieces in this show had to have been Chorn's caveman wig and Ducker's flame crown. Though I had used wigs in previous shows, this was my first experience really designing and styling wigs myself. I wanted to accentuate Chorn's unusually aggressive behavior by adding feathers and bones to her hair as if she had attacked a wild animal (perhaps one of the previous ducks?). Ducker's flame crown was something I felt was necessary to add to the chaos and spectacle of "Ouch my Butt" when the tribe and their village catches on fire. The flashing lights in the crown and the red, orange, and yellow feathers simulate the fire he lights on his head and added to the already intense movement on stage.
