Trolls Jr. (Pilot Production)

December 2023

Trolls Jr. was an opportunity and experience I am incredibly grateful to have had. This project combined my love of animation with theatre, allowing me to explore my style and new ways to create.

This show, first and foremost, was a study in shape and texture. My favorite parts of the Dreamworks Trolls franchise are the detailed textures and vibrant colors- so these had to be apparent in my designs while paying homage to the original color pallets and silhouettes. I am also in love with the scrapbooking nature of the Trolls tribe. Since a major plot point of this show is Poppy leading her fellow trolls in putting up a play for the bergens, I wanted her personal style to influence the entire aesthetic for the costumes, like she added all of the details herself.

This was also my first experience really designing the specifics of the makeup rather than selecting reference photos as my main point of communication. (see below)

Last but certainly not least, designing and constructing the hair was THE major important focal point. This was another place I got to play with texture and shape, using everything from yarn to mesh tubing, to tinsel to create these styles.

Another detail of this show that I am proud of is the extra pair of legs I made for Cooper, the four legged troll. His horse-like stature was such a notable part of his design from the movies, I had to translate it to stage. I made this extra pair of functional legs in my living room with two pool noodles and a lot of hot glue and tape.

The adjacent video shows how they move through the heavier choreography of the show.
